Bhakra Nangal Dam is one of the most breathtaking attractions of Punjab. This splendid dam is just 10 kilometers away from the Nangal town and lies in the District Rupnagar of Punjab. The construction work of this dam began in 1948 and it took almost fifteen years to finish the entire structure. This dam is reckoned as one of the most towering straight gravity dam in the world. Bhakra Nangal Dam is located on the River Satluj on the Punjab-Himachal Pradesh border and from Chandigarh it is almost 116 kms away. This eminent dam offers power solutions to various remote cities of Punjab. At the rear of this dam there exists a huge reservoir known as the “Gobind Sagar Lake” which is reckoned as world’s largest man-made lake. This reservoir occupies an area of approximately 40 square kilometers.

History of Bhakra Nangal Dam

Albeit Sir Louis Dane began the dam’s construction in 1948, the work was stopped in the middle and was restarted by Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru (who was the Prime Minister of India during that time) in 1955. Nehru Ji depicted this dam as “The Temple of Resurgent India” and devoted its services for the country’s profit. It took an amount of 245 crores to construct this dam. This dam is reckoned as a great achievement in engineering and is an unmatched masterpiece.

The Bhakra dam not only generates a vast load of power, but it also obtains the water for the Beas River and supplies it for irrigation purpose in the adjacent states like Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.
